About Us and Our Company
Home Town Honey Inc. is a small, family-owned honey producing company in Kennesaw, Ga, roughly 30 miles north of Atlanta. We were founded in 1992 by Brian and Kim Higgins, and we have actively been producing raw honey and other bee products for over 25 years. Our mission is to serve our customers with the freshest raw local wildflower honey and other high quality bee related products including local bee pollen, a selection of beeswax candles, honey candies, honey straws, and skin products. In 2016, our company was awarded with the “ABF 2016 Best Light Amber Honey National Award” from the American Beekeeping Federation at their annual conference, making us nationally recognized for our honey.
“How did you end up getting into bees and beekeeping?” is a very common question asked when the topic of honey and our business comes up. Well, it all started in back in 1992, when I first started keeping a couple hives. It was suggested to Brian by our local agricultural agency to help pollenate our fruits and vegetables and increase our size and yield of our produce in our garden. They explained that it was not the soil that was the problem but due to the lack of insect pollinators. That year’s produce, with the bees, was the largest we ever seen before with all our fruit trees producing 3x the size of the previous year and our vegetables were noticeably abundant and plumper than the years previously. This discovery and our love for honey fueled a small part-time hobby into a passion and eventually a full-time business.
After this passion was sparked, our small property in Kennesaw, Ga soon became too crowded to keep all our hives on, so we started having friends and family inviting us to put bees on their properties to help with their own gardens too. With these new properties, we were able to start expanding our apiary and hive numbers. This began a slow and steady expansion of our blossoming company for now we have roughly 350 hives on twelve properties over the four northwestern Metro Atlanta counties: Cobb, Bartow, Cherokee, and Paulding.
Our honey is all locally produced by our beehives over our twelve apiaries. Our honey is a wildflower blend composing of a multitude of spring flowers including Poplar trees, Blackberry, Dandelions, Privet, wild Persimmon, Red Clover, and all the other seasonal spring/summer wildflowers. All our honey is produced at our farms and then is processed at our fully licensed and insured facility in Kennesaw, Ga. We pride ourselves in producing the finest quality local honey with zero ultra-filtration and zero pasteurization making it fully raw. We also supply jars that contain 100% pure bee pollen collected by bees from the local flowers. This nutritional supplement is considered to have one of the highest plant-source protein mixes with up to 35% crude protein and contains the majority of the B-complex vitamins known for increasing energy.
After producing honey for a while, our co-founder Kim started experimenting with creating other products made from the bees. The first products were made from one of the most abundant materials produced on the bee’s body, beeswax. We currently have 21 different size and shaped candles made from 100% pure beeswax. She also experimented with other skin care products including lip balms, skin creams, and soaps, slowly adding to the list of thing we offer over time. We also offer flavored honey straws made with all-natural flavors with no artificial colors or flavors.
