The Red Onion Press presents
“Beowulf” at the Mable House Art Center
April 6 – May 28th
Closing Reception May 13th 2pm-4pm
The Red Onion Press in collaboration with the Kennesaw State University’s School of Art and Design has completed the printing of a limited edition of Beowulf, the first of six Classics of English Literature from a series of original woodblocks by the late artist, Bronislaw Bak. These works of art, lost for over 50 years were recovered several years ago in remarkable condition. The 180 illustrations for six filmstrips produced for Encyclopedia Britannica's Filmstrip Division had been the product of a two year-long commission in 1964 by the late artist, Bronislaw Bak.
They include the classic tales of” Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," "Morte d'Arthur," "Beowulf," "The Nun's Priest Tale," "The Second Shepherd's Play" and "Everyman." These 180 original relief prints, hand colored by the artist have never been printed except as slide filmstrips for schools. The filmstrips as well as the projectors (one of which will be on display in the exhibit) have long since been replaced by modern digital teaching aids.
This is a first edition using the printing methods that serve as learning experience in the art of book publication while preserving this original archival work along with a full translation of the Beowulf Saga. As part of the exhibit, a full size antique book printing press will be featured in exhibit and and will be used to demonstrate the method of hand printing. The books will be available for purchase by libraries and schools and collectors to help offset the cost of this project.
