This course provides aspiring screenwriters with essential tools to craft compelling stories for the screen. Students will explore the fundamentals of screenplay structure, character development, and dialogue writing. The class covers formatting basics, industry standards, and techniques for creating engaging narratives. Participants will analyze successful screenplays, learning how to effectively convey visual elements through text. The course culminates in a final project where each student develops a short screenplay or the first act of a feature film. By the end, students will have a solid foundation in screenwriting techniques and a better understanding of the film industry's expectations.
Instructor Dr. Anita August has over 20 years of experience both as a writer and a teacher of creative writing at the university level. She has placed in several screenwriting competitions and has been selected as a fellow to attend the Stowe Laboratory to workshop her Limited Series.
**Participants should bring 3 x 5" index cards and writing materials (notebooks, pens/pencils, laptops, iPads, etc.)
