Hard Space, Soft Body: An Exhibition by Emily Baker & Blaise Dell

October 3 - November 14

This exhibition is rooted in the interplay between industrial sites and
the complexity of identity. Each of our experiences in the "hard
spaces” of huge cities and the industries that built them have led us to
careers in metalworking. Baker’s artwork relates to how the body fits
into industry and Blaisdell’s addresses the misgendered body in public
space. The sculptures in this exhibition are remnants of our respective
resilience as soft bodies in these hard spaces.
By using both the rigid and malleable qualities of metal, wood, and
fabric, our sculptures echo the dualities within these materials and
within ourselves. These static objects only exist through an intense and
intimate collaboration between the material and the hand. In a bid for
connection, the work asks viewers to question the relationship of their
own body to the hard spaces in their lives.
Emily Baker is an Assistant Professor of Sculpture at Georgia State
University and O. Blaisdell is the Sculpture Studio Manager at Georgia
State University.
