"Hereditary" - A Solo Exhibition by Madeline Bass

Artist Statement —
Hereditary came from a place of questioning whether art could exist without crisis. For me
personally, some of the harder moments in my life lit a fire under my creative drive that became
easy inspiration. Having overcome a hard season the new crisis became wondering if I could
still make such works. I came to realize that inspiration flows through everything. It led me to
turn toward my family — past, present, and future — to uncover how deeply inherited
experiences have shaped who I am. Which parts of ourselves belong to us fully, and which
parts are from those that came before us?
Hands repeat here, acting as literal and symbolic carriers of inheritance: they make, break,
carry, hold and remember. They pass down craft, character, identity and memory. This
combination of mold making with stitching involves a lot of precision, perfect timing and
patience. The physical practice of making this art is a ritual of both pain and release, but I’m
learning to embrace art as proof that damage does not negate worth. Family is blood. It’s
chosen, remembered and imagined. It’s pieces of everything and everyone in our lives stitched
together to create a beautiful masterpiece of a pure, cruel, and loving life – one that I am
blessed to call mine.

  • Exhibition Dates: February 26th through April 10th, 2026
